Alifya Aryasena is an American-born Indonesian multi-disciplinary artist based in Paris. Currently enrolled in Parsons at the New School, Alifya's background lives in traditional painting and sculpture, bringing forth a union of the classical and the contemporary in her work in metal. Her style is imbued of the feminine, haunted by the intangible and the divine.

01.Poing de Printemps

Poing de Printemps (Spring’s Fist) is a continuation of a past project completed in May of 2024, titled Tangan Tersuci (Holiest Hand). The fist and its gesture ponders self defence in a modern and wearable context. In France, where the fist was produced, knuckle-dusters are classified within the A1 category — weapons prohibited for acquisition and possession by private individuals. The use of flowers anaesthetises and feminises the apparent threat of the weapon; violence thus is presented as a branch of flowers on the knuckles of the wearer, blooming as callouses do. 

The fist was crafted as a response to a recent event in the author’s life that led to the sentiment of an increasing need to defend oneself. The magnolia branch that adorns the knuckles of the wearer denotes the beginning of Spring, and of the event. The fist was completed between April and May of 2026. Its completion marked the end of magnolia season. The title of the piece is a reference to the French term for a pair of brass knuckles, ‘poing américain’ (American Fist).
