01.Poing de Printemps

May 2026

Brass, silver.
16 x 11 x 8.5 cm.
353 grams.

Poing de Printemps (Spring’s Fist) is a continuation of a past project completed in May of 2024, titled Tangan Tersuci (Holiest Hand). The fist and its gesture ponders self defence in a modern and wearable context. In France, where the fist was produced, knuckle-dusters are classified within the A1 category — weapons prohibited for acquisition and possession by private individuals. The use of flowers anaesthetises and feminises the apparent threat of the weapon; violence thus is presented as a branch of flowers on the knuckles of the wearer, blooming as callouses do.

The fist was crafted as a response to a recent event in the author’s life that led to the sentiment of an increasing need to defend oneself. The magnolia branch that adorns the knuckles of the wearer denotes the beginning of Spring, and of the event. The fist was completed between April and May of 2026. Its completion marked the end of magnolia season. The title of the piece is a reference to the French term for a pair of brass knuckles, ‘poing américain’ (American Fist).

03.Suara Melati
March 2026

Brass, found objects, hair.
Object: 11 x 11 x 15 cm.
250 grams.

Suara Melati (“The Sound of Jasmine”) recounts a story of fragrance and collective memory within maritime Southeast Asia and its contradistinction with its European counterpart. The work reflects fears and superstitions surrounding settlers, kidnapping, and sexual violence in ancient civilisations, primarily in Indonesia; fragrance, particularly that of jasmine, presents itself as a bad omen across several Southeast Asian islands, while simultaneously being a symbol of beauty, elegance, and pleasure upon its arrival in Europe in the 15th century.

Suara Melati finds its roots in the tale of kuntilanak (pontianak in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam), a vengeful spirit of a vampiric woman who died at or before childbirth. She is a long black haired woman dressed fully in white who lives deep within the bamboo forests of ‘the islands’ (Nusantara ꦤꦸꦱꦤꦫ) or among Weeping Fig trees. Javanese women, outside beyond curfew must carry a sharp pair of scissors for protection; babies are put to bed next to kitchen knives.

Signs a kuntilanak is present is the sweet aroma of jasmine following you on the night of a full moon.

06.Tangan Tersuci May 2024

Brass, soft soldering (97% tin 3% silver).
Dimensions unavailable.

The hand of the martyr is the holiest hand, the hand of the devoted at the mercy of the God he believes in, and the victim of a war he shouldn’t have had to face.

Praying hands are begging hands . The act of folding your hands is an act of surrender to God, that you areat his mercy. How powerful then, the weight of the power our hands hold; as though faith incarnate.

Articulate deconstructed hand armour inspired by gauntlets and martyrs, the lack of protection on Joan of Arc’s noble hand, accompanied by research essay/question —  How does martyrdom become the apotheosis of performance by utilising the body as a tool of worship?
